TRAUMA: 10 Day Stage Run Across Montana 2008?

Dearest Listers:
I just wanted to pass this on because, eventually, I should need to recruit some runners for this proposed event.

Peter wrote back that he thought 100 k would be a bit long, per day. I think that is probably right, and will more likely aim at 50 to 55 per day, in planning.

Well, Peter, it is in the early planning stage.

In other words, I have not done anything yet but throw out the idea for other people to think about, thereby committing myself to having to actually do it.

I actually have thought about this for many years as something to put together when I got back to the west. The idea would be to use lesser traveled roads as much as possible (important with Montanans tendency to drive muy rapidamente) and to have occasional forays onto jeep and/or
hiking trails. It may even be possible to plan the route so that it arrives at the start of the LeGrizz 50 Mile. I need to talk to Pat Caffrey, the RD about that. Perhaps it could be timed to start that days' stage the day of Le Grizz.

It would be a stage format. I shudder at the thought of runners trying to do Montana on little sleep. And they could be way too spread out.

So, I am shooting for autumn of 2008. We'll see how it goes. Part of the logistics--do I even try to get permission to venture into Yellowstone and Glacier N.Ps., or run near them? I would want to have the event run from Yellowstone to Glacier, finishing at the USA Canadian border, if possible. Ten days? 100k/day, roughly.

I need to start a club, and that would help with liability insurance. First, I hope to have 1 or two events closer to where I now live, between the Bitterroot and Cabinet Mountains. Awesome territory here. Should be able to have some very challenging, quite vertically intensive runs.

Stay tuned!
I like the name, though, don't you?

Run across montana aiming for October 2008

Greetings:

This is a very advanced notice. I am just beginning to delve into the details of a stage format run across Montana. It will begin in or near Yellowstone National Park
(my current tentative plan is for starting at the MT border near Mammoth), and finish in or near Glacier National Park.

The event will be primarily on roads. It will be routed on lesser used roads where possible.
There should be at least a few stages of trails.

I hope to have the event in late September to early October of 2008.

I am sending this early notice because runners seem to be planning their events quite far into the future. I would appreciate hearing from any runners who are genuinely interested in the run and wish to give it serious consideration.

From preliminary forrays into possible routes, I expect a distance of about 550 miles, to be done in
ten stages. I think it would be a bad idea to run this as a continuous event, even though I am glad to have participated and completed the Run Across Ohio as a "go as you please" event.
This will be about twice as far as that event was, and my thinking is that once a race takes more than
2 days, it is best not to have the runners roaming the countryside sleep-deprived and delirious.

I do not yet know what the entry fee will be. A crew will be a requirement.

So, please, think this over, and let me know if interested. Those who express interest early, and
stay in touch as details are worked out, are the people who will be given the first opportunity to enter.

As Howie Mandell used to say, "C'mon, it'll be fun"!

Run across Montana

I would definitely be interested in that. Montana is one of the states that I'm interested in possibly retiring to, when I get to retire, and what better way to see the state than on foot running across it? I even like the timing of it, gives me more time to work out the details of getting that kind of time off and trip planned. I think he should at least try to get permission to run through the National Parks. I mean how much damage can a few people on foot do? And it would had some awesome scenery. The idea about doing the Le Grizz as part of it would be a great idea too. I think this would a GREAT adventure to add to my collection.
